     Sarah Bates, J.D.

Sarah Bates is the Deputy Regional Director for the Northern Rockies, Prairies and Pacific Region and Senior Director, Western Water, with the National Wildlife Federation, in Missoula, Montana.

Sarah has written and spoken extensively on western water law and policy over the past three decades through university research appointments, conservation advocacy positions, and consulting work with tribal entities and nonprofits. She served as president of the governing board of the Clark Fork Coalition from 2012-16, and since 2007 has been a member of the Carpe Diem West network on climate change and water in the West.

At the National Wildlife Federation, Sarah is leading western water program expansion, including an initiative focused on restoring beaver habitat as an essential component of ensuring resilient headwaters.  She earned her B.S. in Wildlife Biology and Political Science at Colorado State University, and her J.D. from The University of Colorado Law School, in Boulder, CO.
